The Reality of the Winery Dream – 10 Unfiltered Lessons
The Reality of the Winery Dream – 10 Unfiltered Lesson
Building LucidWild Estate has been a masterclass in patience, learning and stewardship. When we started this journey in 2021, we knew we wanted to create world class wine from the iconic 28-year old single-vineyard estate in the Dundee Hills, but we didn’t realize how much the land, our team and our guests would teach us in return.
From the specific complexities of the Jory soil to the living organism in the tanks, barrels and bottles to the delicate art of working with your spouse (without firing each other) to welcoming our guests to the SkyTerraces + WineCaves, the education has been unfiltered and constant.
We’ve distilled our journey down to these 10 lessons. They aren’t just for winemaking – they are for building something that is meant to last for generations.
1. The Why Lesson
Excellence in the bottle is just the invitation. Lasting loyalty is forged when guests connect with the stewardship of the land, the integrity of the farming, and the values of the proprietor.
2. The Farming Lesson
Sterile vineyards make souless wine. True complexity in the glass begins with complexity in the field – an ecosystem where vines are not isolated rows, but active participants in a thriving, biodiverse wilderness.
3. The Spouse Lesson
Scaling a winery dream is a team sport. It requires two people who are willing to own their specific roles with total autonomy, trusting that when one is focused on the ‘Lucid’ the other is owning the ‘Wild’.
4. The Traveler Lesson
Guests travel not merely to drink great wine, but to connect. They seek out destinations that offer a sense of place and a feeling feeling of community – a world where they are active participants in a shared story.
5. The Hospitality Lesson
While guests may forget the specific details of a wine vintage, they will never forget how you made them feel.
6. The Experience Lesson
Invest in crafting the unforgettable. Curate an experience that surpasses the wine and resonates long after the guest departs.
7. The Luxury Lesson
True luxury is defined by curation and thoughtful restraint. It is not about excess, but about ensuring every detail serves a purpose that anticipates the needs of the guest.
8. The Community Lesson
No winery is an island. We thrive only within a connected ecosystem, where the success of our neighbors amplifies our own, and shared struggles form an unbreakable bond.
9. The Culture Lesson
Be generous with purpose. Do more than just delight the guest; use generosity to anchor your culture and build loyalty.
10. The Business Lesson
Prioritize authentic connections, and sales will simply be the byproduct of trust. To chase the sale is to lose the guest.
